This small town author promises adventure and fantasy in his stories. If you're looking for an escape, then dive in with our Writer of the Week from Oregon, Kyle T. Davis.
This small town author writes stories in a big way. At thirty-four, Kyle T. Davis writes everything from sci-fi to fantasy to young adult and adult action/adventure. His book A Protector's Beginning is a YA mash-up of mind-bending sci-fi and mysterious fantasy. It is full of heroes to love and villains to hate.
His favorite character to write though, "I would have to say Baydin. I love the way his character thinks and the depth of his storyline yet to be explored." Writers always put a little of themselves or sometimes, even people they know, into their stories. We asked Kyle if had based his characters on anyone and his answer was, "Not a ton. I do have an older couple in the book that makes a very small appearance that is based on my wife and me."
What started Kyle on his writing journey? "I really was never into reading when I was a kid. My wife got me into reading when we started dating and I never looked back. On top of that, I have always had a very active imagination as a kid. I would escape into worlds I created ever since I can remember."
This fantasy, sci-fi, and adult adventure writer admits that his favorite place to visit is the beach whenever he and his family can get away, or visiting with his in-laws in the country. What about a favorite spot to write? Kyle explained his go-to writing spot is his garage. "I have a little office set up a 5 by 4 feet space. It's super cold in the winter and burning hot in the summer, but it is all mine."
So, what inspires Kyle to write stories like A Protector's Beginning? "I really don't know," He confessed, "Sometimes from reading or watching something, sometimes from long hours pulling at a thin thread, or just BAM! It pops into my head."
When we caught up with Kyle he was reading Fires of Treason by Michele Quirke and listening to the audiobooks of the Isaac Bell series by Clive Cussler. His favorite author quote comes from Frank Herbert in Dune, one of his all-time favorite books,
"I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain."
Of course, we are always curious to know if the author's preferred genre is the genre they also like to read. Kyle told us that he is in fact sci-fi but "I also read a lot of adult action/thrillers." His biggest supporter when it comes to writing is without a doubt his wife, "She is my biggest encourager and my editor in chief."
If you loved A Protector's Beginning then brace yourselves, Mr. Davis is writing another book. "In fact, I am nearly done with a new book. A brand-new series, an adult action/thriller. I am wrapping up the final edits and the last chapter currently, then it's off to the edit before querying it. I am also working on the second Jason Verse book as well as the second volume of my short story The Sparta."
Aside from writing Kyle told The Writing Wall he also enjoyed cooking and creating new recipes when he was not reading, watching sci-fi, or playing D&D.
He also offered the following advice for writers who are looking to self-publish this year, "Do your research but don’t get stuck there. Do a lot and I mean a lot, but at some point, you just got to jump off that cliff. It’s a lot more work than you think it is and you are not just selling a book you are selling yourself."

“How the hell did I get here?” Jason’s gaze flicked down to his right hand, covered in blood - his and the monster’s - and glimpsed the black ring cradled so gently on his finger. “Oh, right,” he whispered with a desperate grin. The stirring monster once again drew his focus. They both stood at the same time, fists raised. Finality hung in the air. This would be the last bout… for one of them, at least. Jason Verse lives quietly with his Uncle Jeb on their family estate, but this mundane life is shattered when he finds a black ring hidden deep in the family manor. Granting him astounding powers and designating him as the champion of Earth, a Protector among the alien realms, finally from this ring Jason finds a purpose. Will it be strong enough to fight the void that lingers so deep in him, the personal war he has fought internally his entire life? In the end, he must choose: accept his new duty or fall under the crushing rage of the void. Thrust into a universe of amazing and terrifying races, advanced technology, and magic, Jason discovers a force that threatens to wash over Earth and control it with an iron fist. Will he have the strength and fortitude to stand against the malevolent forces threatening his world, to overcome the darkness within himself? Only time will tell.
