A former Australian soldier, Damien Linnane was sent to prison in 2015 for what was described as an act of vigilantism. Faced with a complete lack of programs, rehabilitation or tertiary education in custody, he chose to spend his time writing a crime novel by hand, before teaching himself to draw.
His novel, Scarred, was published in 2019, and in 2021 he illustrated the book This Is Ear Hustle under a contract with Random House. He now works as the editor of Paper Chained, a free art and writing magazine for incarcerated people worldwide, while he also pursues a PhD in law.
"There were five now. The mugger, the sex offender, the wife-beater, the drug-dealer. And of course, Peter. Jason hadn’t needed a gun to kill Peter. Jason Ennis doesn't understand why the world is such a confusing place. Why it's so difficult to read between the lines, so hard to understand what people want, such a struggle to fit in. Not that he isn’t trying as he works a dead-end job and chips away at a degree that’s going nowhere."
