Writer of the Week: ALOHA!

Updated: Jul 8, 2020

I believe we can all agree that poets are songwriters, and songwriters are poets. So why not combine the two? This post from the Writing Communities of Twitter and Instagram undoubtedly does. Check out our latest Writer of the Week featuring Stephen Carbon.

Stephen Carbon is from sunny Kauai, Hawaii and it is easy to imagine that living in such a beautiful part of the United States can move one to prose. Stephen composes poetry and enjoys reading existential poetry in his spare time. In the Writing Community, this poet is probably best known by his handle name, @PoetryAloha.

The description of his first book titled Poetry Aloha says it takes "readers on an intimate experience into the beauty and spirit of Aloha in a story of poetry and photos from the island of Kauai. This is a collection of island-inspired lyrical verses of creativity and images of nature. A pure joy and inspiration to share with all of you."

Stephen said Kauai is best known for its "awesome surfing, and beautiful beaches. The botanical wonder of nature on the islands and the people," inspire his writing. They may also influence his photography too. If you follow Stephen on Instagram you will catch some amazing photos of sunsets, mountains, views from all over the island, and even his collection of guitars.

This led me to ask how he became interested in writing in the first place, and Stephen answered, "being a songwriter and a musician."

As a former musician myself, it was a pleasant surprise to hear some of Stephen's tunes. His band is named Carbon 14, and the song I happened to catch on Instagram a few weeks back was Gotta Have Faith.

His band's take on the song Brick House by The Commodores was equally incredible, and an all-time favorite of mine. If you see him on Instagram in the jam shack you will get to hear his cool guitar skills and his band's upbeat tunes.

"Love gives life within," according to Stephen whose poetry reflects those two things very well. For writers and poets alike who are considering the indie author route, he offered this piece of advice "Evaluate your options and costs closely regarding publishing and marketing its viability."
